Picket Fence
The Picket Fence: Symbol of Domestic Bliss
The picket fence has come to define the tranquil life of the suburbanite. How, though, are they made? Having an idea of how to make your own picket fence will help you to decide if that white picket fence and two point five children is really the way you want to go.
First, you will need concrete, nails that have been galvanized for outdoor use, clamps, hinges, and probably goggles. This is the material you will use to construct your fence. You will probably need some tools for installation as well. Consider having a post hold digger, shovel, level, saw, measuring tape, and a plunge router.
There is another decision about your picket fence, though, that you still have to make. Are you going to use a kit that is easy to assemble, or are you going to build everything from scratch? Common sensibility should tell you that the kit is the way to go. They are fairly easy to assemble and look great in your yard. On the other hand, there are those out there who wish to make their own fence from scratch so that it is a completely unique structure. The decision is, of course, yours.
If you choose not to use a kit for your fence, keep in mind that you will have to cut the stakes and posts yourself. You will want to make sure that all the pieces are the same size so that your fence will look uniform, which is part of the point of the picket fence.
Fences are a big part of suburbia. When you make a decision on what kind of fence to use, consider that the picket fence is the eternal American symbol for suburban comfort and tranquility. With the tips here, you can make the decision to build on your own or use a kit, but either way you will have a new fence to show for it.
